Take a look at these before and after pix of a lovely design and install that we’ve been working on during the past week, located at a new subdivision in Louisville. After completing a beautiful job, we’re moving our tools and equipment to start working on the property next door. Literally.

Was that the last snowfall for us over here in the foothills? Possibly, but hopefully not if we get another frost… If you’re worried about your plants getting another bite of frost- take note that the snow is actually a good addition to your garden bed in such a situation. According to Colorado State University’s extension program, snow is a great insulator and protector against cooler temperatures. As a gardener, I love to occasionally peek in on CSU Extension’s “Planttalk Colorado”- an informative blog dispensing local horticulture-based knowledge at the click of a mouse. A gift from son to mother, this is an example of a beautiful new landscape we finished last week. Below are some before and after images. The client requested a “symphony of color” for his mother to enjoy throughout the front and rear garden beds. We did some redesign of the shapes of the existing foundation, salvaged the stones to recreate an edge, redefined the flagstone patio, and of course planted a ton of colorful foliage! Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see just how much of a “symphony” this design will become since most of the vegetation is dormant. I’ll try to come back with some more pix once everything is in full bloom! See before & after pix below:

Check out these before and after pix of a job that we worked on last week (see below). This family has a pump track in their backyard for their kids to enjoy! We came in to clean up the areas around the space, put in some new safety edging, lay out nice new turf atop a brand new irrigation set-up, isolate the area in the center of the pump track with edging and breeze, and build a new fence between their neighbor’s yard. Of course there was a bit of on-site design as usual: we salvaged some rocks to continue a stone wall around the pump track as well as  use extra breeze below some pieces of flagstone as a walkway to the pump track.

Here’s a sweet snapshot of a mini curb-appeal makeover we completed last week! The homeowners had recently built their new porch, so we stepped in to add a few more touches. We started by re-building an existing retaining wall against the porch to accommodate a planter bed. Then we created a softer edge around the perimeter of the front grass lawn using edging and crushed rock. We brought in a new tree, and of course a bit of on-site design took place: we managed to salvage extra rocks to build a small bed around the tree. I’m sure the homeowner will be delighted to plant some perennials in there come spring! 

We love plants, but we also love demo! Below are some shots from a project that we’re currently working on in Broomfield. This old home had an existing sunroom in dire need of some work, with the foundation sinking below grade. We’re out there demoing the entire foundation of the sunroom (among other areas of the interior). More pix to come once there’s more structure to see!

I was strolling into our design studio earlier this week when I noticed some bulbs beginning to emerge- not an uncommon problem here in Colorado. With so many sun-filled days amidst these winter weeks, some of our landscape foliage is prone to “early emergence”. Occasionally, it can be exciting to see the first sign of Spring peeking through the cold soil. However, it can also lead to a shorter life-span of your bulbs, as flower buds and foliage can be at risk of winter scalding if temperatures get too low. It might be a bit late for prevention this year, but next time consider these hints: 1) avoid planting bulbs on south facing exposures, and 2) lay out a thick six-inch layer of mulch during the Fall in those at-risk areas.

Here is an example of a drainage problem in Denver on Larimer Street that we are currently working on.  This backyard lot has experienced torrential flooding in the past.  Our civil engineer is working on different solutions to divert the water away from the structure, while remaining conscious of neighboring properties. Don King has been fixing drainage problems in Colorado for 32 years, and we have a very experienced drainage staff.  If you have any drainage problems, please keep Don King Landscaping in mind!
